Starting Strong #026 -, Kick Your Workouts Up A Notch In May!
May 01, 2012
Hi,

It's the first of May, and a bunch of awesome new stuff has been added to Complete Strength Training! Check out my interview with Gary Taubes, author of the recent books Good Calories, Bad Calories and Why We Get Fat.

Also, if you're looking to get ripped check out The Compete Guide to How to Get Abs below.

And other than that, go and workout hard today! Sweat, push yourself, and do something harder that you've done before - if only a little. You only get better by doing slightly more than you did yesterday.

“Anything is possible. You can be told that you have a 90-percent chance or a 50-percent chance or a 1-percent chance, but you have to believe, and you have to fight.”
~ Lance Armstrong

4) The Simple Math of Muscle and Fat

Losing fat and putting on muscle are the two biggest concerns that most people have. Most of us would like to lose just 5 pounds of fat
(or more ;-), and, you know, just put on 5 pounds of muscle.

Here's the simple formula:

More Weight = More Food

Less Weight = Less Food

You can't put on muscle and lose fat. You can lose a lot of fat, and then gain muscle. But your body is really meant to only go in 1 direction at a time.

If you want to lose fat, then you must eat less than you need to maintain your current weight. If you want to put on muscle, then you must eat more.

I talk to tons of people who want to put on muscle and lose fat. And most of the time they just spin their wheels - they don't eat less so they don't put on fat, but they don't really eat enough to put on muscle, either. In short, they just don't go anywhere.

If there was one simple piece of advice I could give to people who want to get in shape, it is this: choose a really specific goal and go for it. Just try adding five pounds of muscle, or subtracting five pounds of fat. Then measure yourself, and don't worry about doing only one thing at a time.

Your body works best when you do only one thing at a time. So focus, take just a single step forward, and actually make progress.
