Running - Great Benefits and Beautiful Scenery

by Josh
(Missouri)

My favorite way to exercise is a nice run on one of my local trails. I find it's the most relaxing way to exercise and provides amazing benefits as well.

Before I even leave the house I make sure my shoes are snug and tied tight, I have clothes that fit the weather outside: sweat pants and a jacket, or shorts and a light colored shirt. It's easy to overlook what you're wearing in any situation, but if your clothes are loose fitting or dark in color, it can really lower your running experience.

When I get to the trail I make sure to stretch out for at least 20 minutes. Hitting everything from my neck to my legs, there is nothing worse than getting a cramp and cutting my run before I truly start. While stretching try to work on your breathing, taking a breath and holding it in as long as you can and then letting it out slowly. This will really expand your lungs and make it easier on your body later.

One tip I have learned to help my breathing and improve my stamina is to breath down into my belly and try to keep my shoulders and my chest down. By doing this your allowing for your upper body to relax and go with the flow.

After stretching I tend to walk about a hundred yards or so to get my heart rate up and make sure I'm all stretched out. When I'm sure I'm good and stretched and well prepared I set out for my five mile run, enjoying the surroundings as I go. Hope to see you on the trail!

"About 2 weeks ago I read all the ab strengthening stuff on your site because I decided I wanted to be strong, instead of having a lot of belly fat. So I started eating healthier, running, exercising, you name it - everything your site said to do to help. Now I am noticing a real difference! Thank you for making this. :D xD"

[This calorie calculator is] the most useful tool on the web that I can find… Also, I compared the calories calculated by your calculator to the calories calculated by the treadmill at my gym, and they're within a couple calories of each other, so yours is as accurate as we're going to get. REALLY AWESOME TOOL. I love it and depend on it. Thank you sooooo much for making this available."
