Rollerblading To Stay Fit

I love to rollerblade to stay fit! It took a few tries to master, but it was worth the bumps and bruises. I have found a whole new way to experience the outdoors and get a great workout at the same time.
There are lots of "rail trails" around nowadays. Towns and communities are paving over old railroad tracks to provide a smooth pathway for walkers, runners, bikers, and even us rollerbladers. The trails go on for miles in many places.
I have found that I can accomplish about fifteen miles if I have about an hour to an hour a half to skate. Some portions are graded uphills, and those give the best workout to the legs and buttocks. Downhills are gentle, and good for a light break. I can even cool down a bit if I pick up enough speed on a downhill or if there is a breeze.
The equipment is rather easy to obtain. Any sporting goods stores will likely stock rollerblades, pads, and a helmet, if you choose. There is usually a range of colors and styles, if someone feels the need to be fashionable while skating.
Beware, though, this isn't your 6th grade rollerskating experience! Rollerblades can be fast, and mastering the brake can be a challenge. Unlike "quad" skates (skates with four wheels placed in a square on the bottom of the boot) which have the rubber brake in the front of the boot, rollerblades have the brake under the heel of the boot.
I don't think there is anything else as enjoyable as skating through the woods on the nearby rail trail, during the fall when the leaves change colors, or the spring, when the buds are just blooming. Combined with balance, coordination, and a good aerobic workout, I'd say its one of the best ways to stay fit!
